Creative Writing

Tutor:

Jen Brown

Meeting Time:

Wednesdays 12:00-12:50

Course Description

We all know AI is changing the game when it comes to writing. But in my world (professional
ghostwriter by trade), there is a growing pushback against AI. Now more than ever, people want real
human writers with soul and passion. They don’t want to read the formulaic, boring missives of a
robot. Enter me, your child, and this course. Students who think they aren’t writers will thrive here,
because the focus is on tools, formats, and confidence, not being “naturally gifted.”
Most creative writing classes focus on self-expression. That’s valuable, but it’s not what we’re going
for here. In our class, the students will write for real audiences (not just me) and in real formats used
in jobs today. Each week, they’ll have short, manageable weekly assignments and 2-3 larger projects
that may include a 1) Script Project (short, scripted scene or mini-episode), 2) Voice Project (writing
in someone else’s voice based on an interview), and 2) Real-World Project (such as a brand story +
ad script, or possibly a pitch + supporting copy).
Key skills your child will learn:
• Voice and tone control: sounding professional, funny, serious, confident, sincere…
whatever the occasion calls for.
• Clear communication: I’m all about “less is more.” I want to help your kids say more with
fewer words, edit for impact, and write under constraints.
• Ghostwriting skills: I will detail what I do and how I do it (from interviewing to capturing
someone’s “sound,” and staying invisible).
• Writing natural dialogue: natural and unforced with strong voice, pacing, and subtext
• Practical storytelling: write compelling beginnings, tighten middles, and land endings
This will not be the usual “write a short story, get graded on feelings” creative writing class. This
course will be structured as a practical writing studio designed around the kinds of writing people
actually hire for… we’re talking scripts, storytelling for video and media, brand voice, speeches,
persuasive writing, and the unique craft of writing in someone else’s voice (what I do: ghostwriting).
Students will learn how to communicate clearly, creatively, and confidently. The goal is to enhance
skills that transfer directly to college applications, interviews, leadership roles, content creation, and
future careers.
By the end of this course, the hope is that your child will be bored by AI’s formulaic responses
and get excited to better learn their own voice and how to express themselves in any setting.
